Purpose of the Fellowship

The CMRF Emerging Researcher Fellowship will be awarded to a candidate who is pursuing a career in health research. The successful candidate should be capable of independent research activity and truly exhibits all the leadership attributes required for outstanding medical and health research. This fellowship is a personal award, and once awarded, is non-transferable to another person.

Eligibility

* Have held a PhD or an equivalent degree within the last ten years on the application date (exceptions are possible for time spent outside the research environment, for example due to parental leave or illness).

* PhD candidates who have submitted their thesis by the closing date and are awaiting their defence are also eligible to apply

* An applicant must be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident currently residing in Canterbury, New Zealand.

* Do not currently have a continuing/permanent research position and/or a current Fellowship

Value of the Fellowship

The Fellowship provides maximum $100,000 p.a. for salary support, and an annual contribution of up to $10,000 towards working expenses for the project. There are no overhead costs associated with this fellowship.

Tenure of Fellowship

Maximum tenure is 2 years, where the 2nd year is renewed on the basis of a satisfactory progress report.

Conditions of tenure

* The project must be conducted in Canterbury under the control and management of a recognised research institute or organisation, which has the necessary facilities for the conduct and successful completion of the project.

* The project must commence within 6 months of the award date.

* The host organisation must have the necessary in-house management in place to ensure that an appropriate environment, resources and guidance are provided to the applicant.

* Other forms of awards may not be held in conjunction with the Fellowship without the permission of CMRF.

* The fellow is required to submit 6 monthly progress reports and to have achieved a major milestone within the first 12 months.

* CMRF reserves the right to require special reports at any time during the term of the Fellowship.

* All reports will be reviewed and CMRF reserves the right to suspend or terminate the Fellowship should progress be unsatisfactory.

* The Fellow is expected to participate in CMRF-led events including giving public lectures to aid with fund-raising and raising health awareness.

Publications and publicity

Publications and any other publicity that result from research undertaken during the tenure of the fellowship should acknowledge the assistance of CMRF.

Ensure you have your correct institution listed prior to commencing your application form as this can not be changed part way through an application.
