Background
At the beginning of her career in the 1960s, Dame Malvina Major needed help with funds to finance her overseas study. The Rotary Club of Hamilton's donation of £100 was a major contribution, and Dame Malvina never forgot their generous gesture. On her return to New Zealand she was determined to return something to Rotary for their assistance and the method she chose was presenting concerts that would raise funds for Rotary projects. Rotary ChCh South organised a concert for her in 1991. A full house in the Town Hall Auditorium netted $30,000, which was used to set up the Dame Malvina Major Travelling Fellowship. The Fund is managed by the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation. The purpose of the Fellowship is to support a non-medical/ allied health graduate working in child health services within Christchurch Hospital to visit a children's hospital overseas. The applicant must be working full-time in the field of paediatrics and child health.
